Summer may be ending, but Sydney is just starting to heat up. Why? Because it’s time for the 39th annual Mardi Gras! This exuberant extravaganza blankets Sydney with a sea of sequins, feathers and so-high stilettos. Sparkling with self-love and expression, the Mardi Gras embraces true identities through fashion, make up, hair and music. We love the incredibly bold hairstyles and fashions taking over the city. Stretching from the start of February to mid March, the Mardi Gras really is the place to be!
So throw on your most colorful outfit and join in on this incredible extravaganza. In previous years, the likes of Delta Goodrem, Adam Lambert and Kylie Minogue have taken to the stage. Jessica Mauboy’s 2015 daring multi-colored one piece was to die for, with its fun under water feel. Teaming this look with a rocking middle part and loose, voluminous waves, Jess fit right in at Sydney’s biggest party. Samantha Jade killed it last year, performing atop a float in a dazzling sequin encrusted red leotard. Her platinum blonde hair and 1950’s hairstyle added to her classic demeanor, a truly timeless look. And how could we go past 2014 Eurovision winner, Conchita Wurst who always radiates elegance. With a silky dark hairstyle, Conchita looked equal parts graceful and endearing. Her interesting tuxedo styled playsuit with a peephole neckline wow-ed the crowd during her performance with Australian super star Courtney Act
We are so excited for this year’s performance by Indie Pop queens Tegan and Sara. Their signature choppy rocker styles are sure to re-emerge as they headline on 4th of March. And what are the changes that the Mardi Gras would score not one but two sets of twins. It will truly be double DOUBLE (quadruple?) trouble with fashion forward twins The Veronicas also gracing the stage. These girls have always been ahead of the trends. First it was their bold dark lip, then their blunt ebony bobs and now they’re rocking bold teal green hair colors. Perhaps taking inspiration from Kylie Jenner? We love this look on the girls, and predict that their crazy fashions will continue to shine- with the Mardi Gras being no exception!
This years Mardi Gras theme is Creating Equality which highlights and brings awareness to the social pressures that LGBTQI continue to face. This theme also aims to celebrate all that has been achieved by the LGBTQI community and showcase diversity- celebrating the individual!
